Data Management

GIS is the most important component and why I wanted to intern with AccuWeather to satisfy my final requirement to graduate from my Masters program at Wichita State University. Beyond being able to learn and hone my GIS skills, I wanted the access to big data and AccuWeather's weather data. It has been a definite learning curve going through tens of thousands of data points to working with millions of data points. Working with this large of data requires different skills and processes that were new to me but I am feeling comfortable with big data now.

Data Management - Select Layer by Attribute + Add XY Coordinates
Adds, updates, or removes a selection on a layer or table view based on an attribute query. 
Selected Colorado from the states.shp, and created a separate Colorado.shp file.


Data Management - Select Layer by Location
Selects features in a layer based on a spatial relationship to features in another layer. 
Selected COStores that overlap with the Colorado.shp file.

Data Management - Calculate Field
Calculates the values of a field for a feature class, feature layer, or raster. 
Open Table of layer, add field, calculate field [TotalSales = Battery Sales + Water Sales].

Data Management - Mosaic
Creates a mosaic layer from a mosaic dataset or layer file. The layer that is created by the tool is temporary and will not persist after the session ends unless the layer is saved as a layer file or the map is saved. This tool can be used to make a layer so you can work with a specified subset of bands within a mosaic dataset. [Data Management Toolbox (Layers and Table View toolset)]

Data Management - Apply Symbology from Layer
Applies the symbology from one layer to the input layer. It can be applied to feature, raster, network analysis, TIN, and geostatistical layers or layer files. The symbology layer must match the data type and geometry of the input layer; for example, a feature layer cannot be applied to a raster layer and vice versa. Data Management - Feature to Point
Creates a feature class containing points generated from the representative locations of input features. 
Created points based on Tornado tracks, center point of line.

Data Management - Raster to Point
Converts a raster dataset to point features. 
SEemplRasCal (raster) --> SEempR2P2 point feature.


Data Management - XY to Line
Adds the fields POINT_X and POINT_Y to the point input features and calculates their values. 
RetailStores.csv has lat/long information - selected to plot of xy coordinates and create new feature class with store locations mapped. (See first operation on this page for photo)

Data Management - Add Colormap
Adds a new colormap or replaces an existing colormap on a raster dataset. The color map applied to the input raster dataset can originate from a raster dataset that already has a color map, a .clr file, or an .act file. This tool will not work when the color map is internally stored in the attribute table of an IMG or TIFF dataset. If the attribute table contains the fields Red, Green, and Blue, that means this tool cannot be used. The input raster dataset must be a single band raster dataset with integer values. Color maps can only be created for single-band raster datasets with a pixel depth of 16-bit unsigned or fewer. 

Data Management - Transform Projection of Shapefile
Changes the projection of a shapefile if you can't change it through transformation. 
Change projection from GCS_North_America_1983 to GCS_WGS_1984.
